Synopsis
This two-day conference brings together a group of experts focusing on the law and practice of the protection of distinctive signs—namely trademarks and geographical indications (GIs)—in the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN). Participants comprise of academics, policy makers, and practitioners from ten ASEAN member countries. The outcome of the conference is expected to result in two comprehensive volumes addressing, respectively, The Protection of Geographical Indications in ASEAN: Law and Practice” and “The Protection of Trademarks in ASEAN: Law and Practice”.
In particular, on 15 December 2016, participants will explore the law and current practices relating to trademarks in the ten countries members of ASEAN, including the current national laws, administrative practices for registration, renewal, opposition, and cancellation of trademarks, and the analysis of the most relevant national cases. On 16 December 2016, the discussion will continue and address the law and current practices concerning the protection of GIs in ASEAN. In particular, participants will address current national laws, existing administrative practices for registration, renewal, opposition, and cancellation of GIs, and the analysis of some relevant case studies. Experts will address both sui generis national protection for GIs, when applicable in ASEAN member states, and the protection of GIs under national trademark and unfair competition systems.
