Synopsis

This one-and-a-half day academic programme is put together to celebrate the inauguration of the “Applied Research Centre for Intellectual Assets and the Law in Asia” (ARCIALA).

In Singapore’s 50th year after Independence, the programme starts on May 25 with a nostalgic look at the development of IP law and industries in Singapore since 1965. This historical review allows us to understand the context of where we will go next in the ever challenging future of IP and innovation. To look at both legal and business aspects of IP simultaneously and organically is at the heart of ARCIALA. The first generation IP experts of Singapore are among the speakers and discussants.

As Singapore primes itself to be the IP hub in Asia, and her technological capacities are building up through domestic and international patenting, learning from the litigation experiences of high tech companies around Asia is particularly relevant. The first panel in the afternoon of May 25 invites three highly-experienced veterans in the field, HTC, MediaTek and Creative Technologies, to share their first-hand battle skills. All legal disputes hinge ultimately on the central issue of the appropriate remedy.  How the two most populous and fastest-growing nations on earth, India and China, render their remedies for IP infringement as opposed to Singapore will be analyzed in the panel that follows. ARCIALA will strive to position Singapore as the centre of excellence for applied knowledge on developments in how the IP scene in these two giants is evolving.

The first session in the morning of May 26 is about IP co-operation within Asian economies. The development of effective protection for geographic indications and the Asianization of IP law will also be explored. The final panel will explore the new frontiers of IP through the eyes of promising young Asian IP scholars from Singapore and the US, with insight and advice from senior IP scholars and practitioners.

With this programme ARCIALA will be officially launched on its path to help mould and usher in new dynamics in the world of IP, both within Singapore and beyond.
