SMU develops active and socially responsible student leaders through leadership training and development programmes organised by Students' Association (SMUSA) and the four student constituent bodies, namely the Arts and Cultural Fraternity (ACF), SMU Sports Union (SSU), SMU Xtremists (SMUX) and Special Interest and Community Services (SICS).
A comprehensive leadership training roadmap comprising of a variety of training programmes and opportunities for leadership exposure, is provided to support leadership development.
Student leaders are offered ample opportunities to serve and lead the student community in leadership positions in the CCAs, and to organise university-wide events like the Freshmen Orientation Camp, Vivace CCA Day and SMU Challenge. They work with the Office of Student Life to improve the student welfare and co-curriculum learning.
Student leaders are regularly invited to participate in international programmes at reputable institutions overseas. These exchange-cum-study trips provide valuable insights on good practices in student governance and leadership, and networking opportunities with peers internationally.
Outstanding student leaders are recognised and presented with the annual University Student Life Award (USLA).
