Convenient accommodation with proximity to university campus at culturally vibrant district

SMU has procured the lease of 44 apartments from an established local hostel operator, EM Services Pte Ltd, with the aim of providing alternative accommodation to SMU's students at competitive rental. The 44 apartments are on the top-most 2 floors in the 12-storey tall building located at the hilltop of Pearl’s Hill, coined by the operator as yo:HA Hostel @ Pearl’s Hill. The apartments comprise 162 bed spaces for students to choose from and apply.

Location and Surrounding

yo:HA Hostel @ Pearl’s Hill located at 201 Pearl’s Hill Terrace offers tranquility and panoramic view of the Central Business District, with surrounding lush greenery. The operator has converted the 12-storey public housing building into a commercial hostel providing accompanying lifestyle facilities such as a gym, basketball court, badminton court and BBQ pits.

The accommodation at Pearl’s Hill Terrace is sited in the heart of the bustling and vibrant Chinatown.  It is a stone's throw away from the popular food centre, People’s Park Complex Food Centre. Close by are amenities including shopping malls where daily necessities and sundries are available.

Transportation

Transportation to school can never be so convenient, as Chinatown MRT Station and the public bus-stop are within 5 minutes’ walk to the accommodation.  The Chinatown MRT Station is just two stops away from Dhoby Ghuat MRT Station, the nearest MRT Station to the university.  Travelling by public bus is a short distance of just 4 bus-stops away to reach SMU. 

The accommodation at 201 Pearl’s Hill Terrace offers you the choice as follows:

  • Twin sharing in a one-bedroom apartment with provision of two single beds.
  • Quadruple sharing in a two-bedroom apartment with provision of two single beds in each room.

* You may wish to note that the two-bedroom quad-sharing apartment mentioned in yo:HA hostel@pearl's hill (external landlord) website means 4 persons to a room (on double deck/bunk beds) making it a total of 8 persons per apartment. SMU's two-bedroom quad-sharing apartment operates differently - it's two persons sharing one room (on 2 seperate beds) making it a total of maximum 4 persons per apartment.

*Kindly note that if you are staying for a short term lease of less than 4 months, the bedsheet, pillow, pillow case and blanket would not be provided. Alternatively, you may purchase these items from the site office if you wish to do so.

Due to the tropical climate of Singapore and the development’s proximity to lush greenery, the presence of bugs and insects such as ants, cockroaches and lizards in the apartments are not uncommon.

Accommodation and fixed utility charges would be paid directly to SMU, while the admin charges would be collected by the Landlord. For fixed utility charges and accommodation charges, it would be pro-rated accordingly to your last day of stay for the accommodation.

HOW TO APPLY

We accept applications from Senior Undergraduates (full-time SMU students 2nd Year and above) and all other students (Exchange, PhD or Masters) who have accepted the offer to study full time at SMU.

The allocation of rooms is at the discretion of the University and subject to the disposition and needs of applicants. Allocations will result in students of various age and cultural backgrounds being accommodated together in shared units, a reflection of SMU’s diverse student population. 

Changing of rooms will not be allowed.

Do note that all applications for rooms have to be done through SMU directly in order to be valid. If you apply through yo:HA hostel@pearl's hill (external landlord) website, you will not be considered for any contract terms that we have negotiated as a group jointly under SMU. APPLICATION DEADLINE

All students are advised to submit their e-application from 02 June 2017 (10am Singapore time) to 14 July 2017 (1159pm Singapore time).

Applications will be processed on a first-come-first-serve basis and will close once all the rooms are taken up, even before the deadline. Any applications received before the application start date and time would not be considered, so students are advised to adhere strictly to the timing.

If you apply before the start date stated above, your first application will be invalid and you will need to apply again. If you applied after the start date stated above, your application will only be considered if there are still vacant beds available.


APPLICATION RESULTS

Successful applicants will be informed of their application results and room allocations via email. Successful applicants are able to move in from 1 August 2017.

Unsuccessful applicants will be placed on a waiting list and any allocations will be given based on any withdrawal or cancellation. However, being placed on the waiting list does not guarantee an offer of accommodation.


EARLY CHECK-IN

Early check-in is chargeable and is subject to room availability. A two-week advance notice is required for processing, you must email us to inform of your intention for early check-in. It is chargeable and subjected to room availability.

You will need to pay a one month advance accommodation fee to secure your early check-in booking, of which would be used to offset charges for your early check-in stay, bank charges and currency exchange rate differences. The balance if any, would then be refunded to you after you have check-out.  


NOTE TO ALL APPLICANTS

1. Submission of this application does not guarantee an offer of accommodation.

2. The mode of payment is via Telegraphic/Bank Transfer only. A copy of the completed transaction slip or email notification from the bank for the payment made shall be returned to smuhostel@smu.edu.sg by the date stated in the Letter of Offer, in order for your bed to be reserved successfully.

3. Confirmation: Successful applicants are required to pay the entire accommodation fees including utilities for the period of stay upfront when they receive the letter of offers for their stay. We would only be able to confirm your accommodation upon receipt of full payment.

4. Administrative Fee: As the apartments are owned by EM Services Pte Ltd, successful applicants must make a separate payment of S$85.60 Administrative Fee to the site administration staff of EM Services Pte Ltd during check-in at yo:Ha Hostel @ Pearl's Hill.

5. Pre-temination of stay: Successful applicant is expected to remain in residence for the time specified in the agreement once an allocation of the accommodation has been assigned to and accepted by him/her. No pre-termination of stay is allowed except for unforeseen circumstances such as withdrawal of course from SMU.

Payments for accommodation fees can be made by:

A. Cheque
Made payable to “Singapore Management University” and submitted personally to the Office of Finance at Level 12 Administration Building; or

B. NETs or Credit/Debit Card
in person at the Office of Finance*; or

C. Online Credit/Debit Card Payment
via Student Self-Service Page

* Office of Finance's operating hours are from Tuesdays to Thursday 11.00am to 2.00pm excluding public holidays.
