ASEAN Internship Programme Plus (AIP+), Ho Chi Minh City

Q) What motivated you to participate in this programme?

A) I wanted to step beyond my comfort zone and gain first-hand experience working overseas, particularly in a fast-growing economy like Vietnam. AIP+ offered global exposure while allowing me to fulfil my internship requirement and clear an additional module, making it both professionally enriching and academically meaningful. It felt like a valuable opportunity to broaden my horizons early on.

Q) Please describe your overall experience.

A) My internship at TRG International was both demanding and rewarding. As a Business Analyst Intern, I worked on client-facing tasks such as market research, requirements analysis, and building real-time SQL dashboards, which gave me practical exposure to consulting in a regional context. Beyond work, I formed meaningful friendships with fellow interns and local colleagues and had the opportunity to travel within Vietnam. The experience helped me grow both professionally and personally.

Q) In what ways did this experience add value to your SMU education and/or professional development?

A) The internship allowed me to apply classroom knowledge to real business challenges, particularly in analytics and reporting. In an age shaped by AI and automation, I learned that technical skills must be complemented by critical thinking, adaptability, and strong communication. The experience strengthened my confidence and positioned me well for future internship opportunities.

Q) Why Asia? What advice would you give to juniors or fellow students who are considering a similar experience?

A) Asia is one of the most dynamic and interconnected regions in the world, and Vietnam’s rapid growth reflects this momentum. Being close to home yet immersed in a different working culture made the experience both accessible and transformative. I would encourage juniors to embrace discomfort and take on such opportunities, as meaningful growth often comes from stepping into unfamiliar environments.
