Name of activity/programme/experience

SMU-XO: ECON248: Overseas Project Experience: Macroeconomics in Asia

What motivated you to participate in this programme/activity?

I am interested in macroeconomics and markets, which include themes such as growth, inflation, the labor market, foreign exchange markets, etc. Since the module would give me the chance to work with Vietnam's central bank, the State Bank of Vietnam, it was the ideal module for me as central banks are principally concerned with macroeconomics. Besides, I have heard many great things about Vietnam from friends who are obsessed with taking trips there, and this module would facilitate my first trip to Vietnam.

Please describe your overall experience.

The project was trying and fulfilling, Intellectually, it really pushed my limits in trying to analyze and model Vietnam's growth trajectory and thereafter provide policy recommendations to the State Bank of Vietnam as per our project requirements. It was quite fascinating when we had the opportunity to meet local professors and industry professionals who had expert, on-the-ground knowledge of the local economy. They gave us insights and feedback about important economic developments that we would not have been able to find through desk research on our own.

In what ways did this experience add value to your SMU education and/or professional development?

Where many Economics modules typically work largely with theory and Math, this module provided practical experience doing tasks that were more akin to what an economist might actually do. We had to apply our theories to Vietnam's actual macroeconomic situation, and use our theories to propose policy solutions to the problem. As a resume item, this project has typically drawn interest from interviewers, particularly as it clearly signals my interest in macroeconomics to potential employers, who would see that I have taken a project working with a central bank.

Why Asia? What advice would you give to juniors or fellow students who are considering a similar experience?

As it were, much of Singapore's, and even our own future prospects are linked to the rest of Asia, where Singapore has been a hub for various trade and services. It is advantageous to become more knowledgeable about other economies in the region. I'd encourage those considering similar overseas experiences to research the country deeply beforehand, and go there with well-informed questions. Then you'd get straight to more insightful responses when you have the chance to ask locals about these topics.
