What motivated you to participate in this programme/activity?
I had always heard that India is now one of the fastest growing economies of the world, but I had never experienced it for myself. Having had countless questions about the intricacies of its market, its culture, and the way business was done on the ground, this trip was the perfect opportunity to explore those questions firsthand, so I excitedly applied.
Please describe your overall experience.
The trip was incredibly eye opening. Hearing Singaporean business leaders share how they thrive amidst uncertainty also reshaped my perspective, helping me see “chaos” as opportunity. Beyond business, the cultural experiences such as donning traditional Indian attire, eating traditional foods and learning cricket with our hosts, made the journey deeply meaningful and showed me a country full of diversity, vibrance, and immense potential.
In what ways did this experience add value to your SMU education and/or professional development?
The BSM to Mumbai truly widened my horizons and reminded me that Singapore’s way of operating is just one model among many. Now that I am working professionally in trade, I find myself more confident navigating cultural differences and engaging with diverse stakeholders because of the exposure I gained on the trip. I also continue to keep in touch with the friends I formed during the BSM, which makes the experience even more meaningful.
Why Asia? What advice would you give to juniors or fellow students who are considering a similar experience?
Asia is incredibly diverse. While we may share similar cultural roots, the differences in economic systems and market dynamics are vast, and there is far more to learn beyond what we see in class or headlines. Moreover, in today’s unpredictable geopolitical climate, understanding how to work with our regional neighbours is essential.
