Business Study Mission to India (Mumbai)

Motivation for participating in this programme/activity, and why Asia

I was motivated by my aspiration to pursue a career beyond Singapore and to gain exposure to a fast-growing economy like India. My love for Indian food (especially dosa!) and my major in Workforce Transformation also drew me to learn more about India’s digitalisation practices and workforce evolution in a rapidly developing context.

My overall experience

The programme was an eye-opening immersion into India’s paradoxes where cutting-edge 5G networks and conglomerates like Reliance coexist alongside visible economic disparity. Through corporate visits and cultural exposure, I gained deeper insights into India’s socio-economic systems and vibrant culture. The experience helped me appreciate the complexity and dynamism of Mumbai.

In what ways did this experience add value to your SMU education and/or professional development?

The study mission brought concepts such as digital transformation and ESG to life in a real-world emerging market context. India's “Juggaad” (ie innovative) spirit has truly broadened my perspective beyond Singapore’s structured systems, and taught me the importance of staying adaptable.

What advice would you give to juniors or fellow students considering a similar experience?

Personally I would try to gain an understanding of different ways of living, and make new local friends!
