Synopsis

As a developing country India has carved out a distinct space in the global intellectual property debate. This talk which was delivered at the IPA was aimed at explaining the history and development of India’s IP regime over the decades. The four main areas discussed during this talk were the history of pharmaceutical patents in context of the Novartis-Glivec case, the history of India’s educational use exceptions in context of the recent DU Photocopy case, the recent copyright amendments in India and the global implications of an ongoing dispute in India over registering basmati as a geographical indication.
