Psychology SMU-XO Overseas Project Experience (Applied Psychology in Asia) to Taiwan
What motivated you to participate?
Given that one of the main reasons why I joined SMU was for the global exposure opportunities offered, I always had my eyes peeled for chances to expand my cultural perspectives. When I saw this SMU-XO course, I was immediately drawn to it for various reasons! Firstly, I had a keen interest in applied psychology, with the module providing a chance to turn theory into practical recommendations with a real client. Secondly, the module offered a unique opportunity to immerse myself in Taiwan’s culture through visits to various cultural and business institutions and project work with local Taiwanese students.
A brief reflection on your overall experience
Overall, I found myself immersed in Taiwan’s culture and creative scene at a level beyond what I would have experienced as a regular tourist. Working with our client and speaking with local organisations, I gained rich insights into Taiwan’s innovation and sustainability scene while being able to draw parallels and comparisons with Singapore’s own scene. I especially enjoyed working alongside our Taiwanese university counterparts who not only provided their local knowledge as we worked on our projects but also became friends whom I continue to keep in touch with until today!
How did this add value to our SMU education or professional development?
Academically, I was able to apply the psychology concepts I had learnt to solve real problems, showing the relevance of the social sciences in the real-world while enhancing my understanding of such concepts. Professionally, the programme honed intercultural communication skills and a wider global perspective that I believe are crucial for succeeding in today’s globalised work environment.
Why Asia? What advice would you give to juniors considering a similar experience?
On both a personal and professional level, I see immense value in understanding and appreciating the cultures and business environment in wider Asia. Not only have my experiences in Asia made me feel more strongly rooted in my Asian heritage but has also helped me see the interdependence and importance of collaboration between Asian countries. I would highly recommend all juniors to apply and go in with a curious, open mind!
