SMU-XO: Applied Social Science in Global Asia
What motivated you to participate?
I was motivated to participate primarily because of the overseas learning opportunity in Thailand. The chance to gain first-hand exposure beyond the classroom was particularly appealing to me. I was excited about learning in a real-world context and engaging directly with the local community.
I was also drawn to the opportunity to collaborate with students from a local university in Thailand. The prospect of cross-cultural exchange and working with peers from a different background strongly resonated with my interest in cultural learning and global perspectives.
Additionally, the programme offered a unique blend of academic rigor and experiential learning, which made the experience both meaningful and enjoyable. The opportunity to travel, explore a new environment, and learn in a dynamic setting was definitely a key motivating factor.
A brief reflection on your overall experience
Overall, the overseas experience was both fruitful and eye-opening. It allowed me to gain deeper insights into the local community, their social structures, and everyday practices. Additionally, working on a project in collaboration with an overseas company enabled me to better understand real-world challenges from perspectives that cannot be fully captured through textbooks or lectures.
One of the most valuable aspects of the programme was the opportunity to move beyond theoretical learning and apply academic concepts in a practical setting. The immersion experience challenged my assumptions, strengthened my adaptability, and broadened my global outlook.
Beyond the academic and professional learning, I also formed meaningful friendships and created many memorable experiences. I am especially grateful to Professor Ho Jack Yong and our teaching assistant, Masliana, who meticulously planned the trip and ensured that it was both enriching and well-organised.
How did this add value to our SMU education or professional development?
In today’s rapidly evolving and interconnected world, cross-cultural awareness and global exposure are increasingly essential. This programme enabled me to develop greater cultural sensitivity, adaptability, and communication skills - all of which are critical in a globalised workforce.
By gaining new global perspectives and working in diverse teams, I strengthened my collaboration skills and enhanced my ability to navigate differing viewpoints effectively. The experience also deepened my appreciation of how social science concepts can be meaningfully applied in practical, real-world contexts across different regions. These frameworks are not only academically relevant but also valuable tools that can be adapted and shared to address complex global challenges.
Why Asia? What advice would you give to juniors considering a similar experience?
Asia presents a rich diversity of cultures, economic systems, and social challenges, making it an incredibly meaningful region for applied learning. The region’s dynamic growth and complexity provide valuable insights into global development and regional interdependence.
For juniors considering a similar experience, I would strongly encourage you to step out of your comfort zone. Be open-minded, proactive in engaging with global communities, and willing to embrace unfamiliar situations. The first step may feel uncertain, but once you muster the courage to explore and fully immerse yourself in the experience, you will discover countless opportunities for growth, learning, and meaningful connections.
