Name of activity/programme/experience
Self-arranged summer and winter external study programmes at Korea University
What motivated you to participate in this programme/activity?
What drew me most was how greatly global it was, with professors and students from all over the world. I knew that learning in such a diverse environment would broaden my perspectives in ways a single system never could. Beyond academics, Korea was an interesting country that I was looking to learn and experience.
Please describe your overall experience.
It was an unforgettable experience for sure. From making friends with people from all over the world, to exploring different parts of Korea beyond Seoul, to even attending Kanye West’s concert, it’s a time I would relive in a heartbeat. Most of all, the people I met made my time in Korea a true blessing - I formed great friendships with those from the US, Europe, and Asia, including a Central Asian friend whom I remain close to today!
In what ways did this experience add value to your SMU education and/or professional development?
The programme exposed me to an exceptional diversity of perspectives, shaped by professors from eminent global institutions like UCL and Cornell, and students from vastly different cultural backgrounds. These interactions allowed me to understand not only Korea more deeply, but also how people from different societies think, communicate, and approach problems. Professionally, learning alongside local students offered grounded insight into everyday life and work culture in Korea.
Why Asia? What advice would you give to juniors or fellow students who are considering a similar experience?
Asia stood out to me because of its immense diversity and growing economic presence - each country feels distinctly different, even within East Asia and Southeast Asia, yet all play an increasingly critical role in the global economy. Experiencing this firsthand fundamentally reframed how I understand people, economies, and view life as a whole. My advice is to stay open and be bold - life has a way of surprising you when you do!
