SMU President's new book documents culture and flavour of local hawker centres

SMU President Professor Lily Kong has researched and written the second edition of the publication, Singapore Hawker Centres: People, Places, Food. This edition is a continued celebration of hawker culture, Singapore’s first element inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The publication was launched with the support of the National Environment Agency and National Heritage Board. Prof Kong shared that any culture will inevitably change over time and local hawker culture is no exception. Just like the hawker centre she remembered when she was a child, it is very different from what it is today. She believes that hawker centres may evolve over time into a place that can provide a variety of food options at a variety of prices, including more exquisite ones and some with popular prices.
