Research Bulletin

Issue 01 | Apr 2013

Dear Readers,

Welcome to Research Bulletin, the inaugural online newsletter of the Office of Research (ORe)!

I would like to briefly share about ORe’s first Research Strategy & Sharing Presentation held on 5 March 2013. The session was organised to update and discuss SMU’s ongoing efforts and future opportunities in research. Among others, we shared about our plans for the Institutional Review Board, SMU’s Areas of Excellence (AoEs), and Institutes, Centres, Labs & Initiatives (ICLIs). The National Research Foundation (NRF) was also invited to take us through the types of research areas it funds. Mr Philip Ong, NRF’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer also updated us on NRF’s key priorities for the near future.

Apart from NRF funding, ORe also administers internal grants, external grants and fellowships. You will find several recent awardees listed in this newsletter. Furthermore, ORe’s other functions include the review of all research involving human subjects undertaken by the SMU community through the Institutional Review Board; the organisation of events (such as the Profiles of Excellence Lecture Series) as well as to drive initiatives of our postgraduate research programmes.

As SMU research grows, we hope to feature and share SMU’s research happenings with everyone. So if you have exciting research stories that you would like to share, feel free to drop us an email and we may feature them in our newsletter!

We hope you enjoy reading our newsletter!

With warmest regards,

Professor Steven Miller
Vice Provost (Research)
