Overseas PhD Scholarship



SMU’s Overseas PhD Scholarship is a prestigious scholarship that aims to attract and encourage talented young Singaporeans to embark on an academic career by providing financial support as well as guidance and mentorship. The scholarship will provide financial support for up to five years while the selected scholars complete their overseas studies towards a PhD degree or appropriate terminal degree for their discipline. 

These scholarships may be awarded at different stages:
i)     immediately after completing UG studies (eg. after the MOE-Autonomous University UG scholarship or after graduating from a UG programme)
ii)    after completing a UG degree or a Master’s programme and/or having worked for some years
iii)    mid-term for example, an individual who is already enrolled in a PhD programme overseas

The scholarship includes all tuition and mandatory fees, overseas maintenance allowance, monthly stipend (with CPF where applicable), research allowance, overseas medical insurance, economy return airfares.

The scholar will be assigned a SMU faculty mentor through their course of study and have opportunities to participate in development programmes. On successful completion of the PhD / terminal degree programme, the scholar will be considered to join SMU’s faculty as an Assistant Professor on the tenure track.

Service commitment

At least 4 years to the sponsoring Autonomous University after completion of PhD studies. Mid-term awardees will have a service commitment of 1 year for every year of sponsorship.

Eligibility criteria

- Singapore citizens. 
- Candidates should demonstrate a high degree of proficiency and motivation and should have an excellent academic record.
- A keen interest in an academic career in any of the disciplines at SMU.
- Applications are invited from graduates with good Bachelor’s or Masters degrees, which include, Business, Economics, Accountancy, Social Sciences, Law, Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics and Mathematics.

Application Process

Candidates who interested to apply are required to complete and submit the Overseas PhD Scholarship Application Form along with the following:
i)    a personal statement describing your area/s of interest and your motivation for pursuing an academic career 
ii)    detailed CV
iii)    degree certificates and academic transcripts
iv)    names and email addresses of three references who are familiar with your education/work

You may also wish to submit the following:
i.    a sample of your writing that demonstrates your ability to explain and summarize a topic of academic interest to you (approximately 2 pages)
ii.    test score or other supporting documents 

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview with faculty from their discipline of interest. Decisions on the scholarship award will be based on the interview and the application materials submitted.
