About the Scholarship
The Temasek Foundation International Leadership Enrichment and Regional Networking Programme @ Singapore Management University 2017 is available to full-time undergraduates at the Singapore Management University (SMU) who wish to spend a semester of study abroad with SMU’s partner universities in Asia, as well as inbound exchange participants from SMU's partner universities in Asia to SMU.
 
Funded by the Temasek Foundation International (TFI) and into its tenth year, the TFI Leadership Enrichment and Regional Networking (LEaRN) Programme aims to facilitate the following learning objectives for its participants from SMU and her partner universities:
 
(a) Learning about the business and cultural environments in Asian countries
(b) Expanding international networks
(c) Advancing leadership and entrepreneurial skills
(d) Developing broader perspectives of our region
(e) Supporting social causes by contributing to the community

Eligibility Criteria

Outbound (SMU Students)

  • Full-time SMU undergraduates pursuing any programme of study
  • Singaporeans or Singapore Permanent Residents
  • Completed at least 1 year of studies at SMU at the time of scholarship application
  • Good academic performance (minimum cumulative GPA of 2.70) and proficiency in English
  • Fulfill immigration requirements in Singapore and the country of the partner university
  • Willingness to live in another culture, in local conditions
  • Ability to take on the ambassadorial role required of an exchange student

Inbound (Incoming Exchange Students)

  • Full-time undergraduates of Asian nationalities in partner universities in Asia
  • Completed 1 year of studies at home university at the time of scholarship application
  • Good academic performance (minimum cumulative GPA of 2.70) and proficiency in English
  • Fulfill immigration requirements in Singapore and the country of the partner university
  • Willingness to live in another culture, in local conditions
  • Ability to take on an ambassadorial role required of an exchange student

Quota

(a) Outbound: 15 (for Fall and Spring Exchanges in Asian partner universities)
(b) Inbound: 15 (only for Fall Exchanges in SMU)

Tenure and Benefits

  • Each scholarship, tenable for a semester of study, is valued at:

-  Inbound : $6,500 each
-  Outbound : $7,000 each (China, India and Indonesia)
-  Outbound : $6,000 each (Philippines and Thailand)
-  Outbound : $5,000 each (Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan)

  • The quantum goes towards subsidising the airfare, accommodation, books and living expenses.
TFI LEaRN Scholars are to participate in the following activities:
(a)  Community Outreach
  • Participate in meaningful community projects with focus in the 5 key areas of need – Elderly, Children & Youth, Women, Disability Groups, and the Environment.
  • The Centre for Social Responsibility (C4SR) in SMU will oversee this participation.
  • Outbound TFI LEaRN Scholars: required to contribute to their host countries by engaging themselves in community projects.
  • Inbound TFI LEaRN Scholars: required to participate in one of the community projects facilitated by C4SR.
(b)  Journaling and Sharing
  • Expected to share their experiences to the student community on their return to home countries, so as to inspire others and to cultivate a sense of social responsibility.
  • Encouraged to keep journals and photos to record their daily experiences or interesting highlights.
  • Required to submit a 2,000-word report on their exchange and community outreach experiences.
  • Required to organise a joint-symposium to present on their experiences, as well as how these can be applied to a topical issue of relevant to their home countries.
(c)  Peer Network
  • Form a peer network so as to remain connected with all TFI LEaRN Scholars, forging a stronger sense of identity.
  • Assist other students in their decision-making and planning to go overseas on exchange.
  • Facilitate the sharing of local knowledge and expertise.
  • Be prepared to participate in a joint networking event involving past scholars, other student leaders, faculty and representatives from industry.
(d)  Symposium (Youth Leadership in Asia)
  • Organise a joint symposium including a sharing session together with TFI LEaRN Scholars from participating universities with the objective to explore fresh approaches to providing leadership and new insights to learning on socio-political, cultural and business aspects in Asia.
(e)  Temasek Learning Journey
  • Participate in a 1-day Temasek Learning Journey (inclusive of a networking lunch) to better understand the donor organisation and its activities, as well as build stronger cohesiveness and identity among TFI LEaRN Scholars from SMU and other participating universities.

About the Donor

Temasek Foundation International is a Singapore-based non-profit philanthropic organisation that funds and supports programmes, which aim to build capabilities with programme partners in Asia and beyond. These programmes enable human and social capital development, contributing towards a more vibrant and connected global community, with positive networks of cooperation. Temasek Foundation International, formerly known as Temasek Foundation, was set up in 2007 by Singapore investment company, Temasek. It was renamed Temasek Foundation International in 2016.
 
Temasek Foundation International also manages the Singapore Technologies Endowment Programme (STEP), which was established in 1997. This programme focuses on social and cultural activities, leadership skills, environmental knowledge and innovation.
