Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple Bursary

About the Bursary

Established in 2015, the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple Bursary provides financial assistance to full-time undergraduates enrolled into the Singapore Management University.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Full-time undergraduates enrolled in any degree programme
  • Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents
  • With demonstrated financial needs (gross monthly household per capita income not exceeding $1,400)
Quota
  • Freshmen – 2 bursaries to be awarded annually and in perpetuity, commencing AY2015-16.
  • Current students – 12 bursaries to be awarded over a three-year period with 6 in AY2015-16, 4 in AY2016-17 and 2 in AY2017-18.

At steady-state, the scheme will provide financial support to 8 needy students annually.

Tenure and Benefits
  • Newly admitted students – Tenable for up to 4 years (renewal on a yearly basis subject to the continued observance of the eligibility criteria and the terms and conditions of award)
  • Students in any year of study – Tenable for one year of study
  • Each bursary is valued at $7,500 per annum
  • The bursaries will go towards funding the recipients' annual tuition fees.
  • The recipients may be in concurrent receipt of another bursary for cash allowance, subject to fulfilment of its eligibility criteria.

Tuition Grant Scheme
  • The recipients are required to take advantage of the Tuition Grant Scheme (TGS) provided by the Singapore Government for subsidised education.
  • Under the TGS, non-Singaporean recipients (including Singapore Permanent Residents) will be contractually obliged to work for Singapore-based companies for 3 years upon graduation.

Shortlisting of candidates for consideration will be from the list of applicants applying for SMU-administered bursaries in the year of award.

About the Donor

Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple (观音堂佛祖庙) is a traditional Chinese temple situated at 178 Waterloo Street in Singapore. Built in 1884, it is one of the oldest temples in Singapore and is a popular place of worship for local devotees of Guan Yin (观音), the Goddess of Mercy. The Temple is known for its work towards charity, contributing to several health and educational organisations.
