Hotel 81-Choo Chong Ngen Bursary

About the Bursary

Established in 2015, the objective of the Hotel 81-Choo Chong Ngen Bursary is to benefit financially needy Singaporean undergraduates enrolled in any full-time degree programme at SMU – so as to ensure that deserving students can achieve academic excellence and complete their university education, regardless of their ethnicity and means and without financial obstacles.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Full-time undergraduates enrolled in any degree programme
  • Singapore Citizens
  • Good CCA and/or community service involvement
  • With demonstrated financial needs (gross monthly household per capita income not exceeding $950)

Tenure and Benefits

  • Each bursary is valued at $8,000 and tenable for one year of study
  • The bursaries will go towards funding the recipients' annual tuition fees.
  • The recipients may be in concurrent receipt of another bursary for cash allowance, subject to fulfilment of its eligibility criteria.

Tuition Grant Scheme

The recipients are required to take advantage of the Tuition Grant Scheme provided by the Singapore Government for subsidised education.


Shortlisting of candidates for consideration will be from the list of applicants applying for SMU-administered bursaries in the year of award.

About the Donor

Mr Choo Chong Ngen, is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Singapore's largest chain of owner managed hotels under Hotel 81(economy), Value Hotel (3 star), V Hotel (4 star) and Venue (boutique). He spear-headed the growth to its current size consisting of 37 hotels and more than 4800 guest rooms in less than 20 years. Mr Choo was awarded the prestigious Entrepreneur of the Year (Singapore) by Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards (APEA) in 2013.

In 2015, Mr Choo endowed a generous gift of $2 million to establish the Hotel 81-Choo Chong Ngen Bursary in conjunction with the 15th anniversary of the Singapore Management University (SMU). With the matching by the Singapore Government, the proceeds will fund 24 bursaries to benefit financially needy Singaporean undergraduate students.
