Wellness & Counselling

CENTRE FOR COUNSELLING AND GUIDANCE

Students in universities often encounter challenges throughout the tenure of their studies. They face difficulties like separation from their families (international students), growing up and learning to function as independent adults, developing new and closer relationships, as well as defining and establishing themselves on a possible career path. Matured students would also face some of the same types of challenges, while also managing other responsibilities as well as more permanent relationships.

The students who seek counselling at the Centre do so because they see it as an aid to their personal development during their time here. Through counselling, they are able to raise the level of self awareness and to become more confident in both their work and relationships with others.

At the Centre, we will help you tackle these adjustment challenges and to cope with the demands of our rigorous university program. Whatever it is, we will be there to provide a listening ear.

SMU PEER HELPERS

The SMU Peer Helpers are full-time undergraduate students trained in counselling skills and are supervised by the counsellors from the Centre for Counselling & Guidance.

Their main passion is to provide a listening ear to fellow students who need a safe place to share their troubles.

They also operate the SMU Wellness Centre and provide the student community with a welcoming environment for relaxation, cosy chats and an avenue to momentarily shed woes.

The Peer Helpers are currently preparing themselves to offer Mediation (for conflict management) services to the student community starting Academic Term 2 07/08.
