International Students

International students play an important role in contributing to the multi-cultural character of SMU. This diverse university population contributes significantly to cross-cultural understanding and allows for a deeper awareness of world issues.

The Office of Student Life annually plans a series of social and recreational programmes to engage our international students. These activities provide opportunities for integration with the university community and are aimed at enhancing the student experience.

Our Orientation Programmes are packed with exciting activities to help you accomplish a smooth transition into university life. We encourage you to participate in all our orientation events and to make the most of your stay here at SMU.

You will be happy to know that all these programmes, brought to you by the Office of Student Life, are complimentary.

Singapore Sh10k!

In commemoration of SMU's 10th Anniversary this year, we have published an updated version of the international students' guidebook. This new and revised survival kit helps SMU's freshmen international students integrate and adjust to life in Singapore and academic challenges. Singapore Sh10k! dishes out much street-smart wisdom and first-hand knowledge of SMU student life from seniors, who also created the publication. This limited edition promises to be more jolly and informative as it includes new sections such as interviews with alumni, unique highlights on various cultures and more recommendations on eateries, places of interests and other useful tips for our students. All international freshmen will receive a copy of this book at the International Students' Orientation Briefing!

SMU International Connections

SMU International Connections (ICON), our international students' club, partners the International Students' Unit (ISU) to help foster relations between the University's local, international and exchange student communities.

Since 2008, we have seen the formation of 9 sub-groups under ICON. Each sub-group aims to contribute to the cultural diversity of our University by promoting exchanges of cultures through events and activities organized and linking the SMU community to an array of global opportunities. SMU ICON witnessed a major change in its structure in 2009 where it was transferred from being a CCA under Arts and Cultural Fraternity (ACF) to directly under SMU Students' Association (SMUSA), which better positions SMU ICON in catering the needs of international students.

The 9 sub-groups are namely:

Apsara Cambodia

Chao Vietnam

Connect China

SMU Barkada (Filipino Community)

SMU Francophiles

SMU Myanmar Community

SMU Roots

Yim Siam (Thai Community)

Woori Sayi (Korean Community)
