SMU Ambassadorial Corps

The role of the SMU Ambassadors was first created in August 2003 to offer exemplary students the experience to hone PR skills as student representatives of SMU.

Every year, new ambassadors are selected to represent the school in welcoming external visitors ranging from prospective students, international visitors and government representatives.

Besides hosting distinguished guests at major events such as SMU's Campus Opening and the annual Patron's Day, the ambassadors work with the SMU administration and faculty in organising and managing university projects which reach out to external partners and the general public.

The ambassadors also represent the university at local/international forums and conferences by providing the SMU-undergraduate perspective to the media.

Currently, SMU has 40 student ambassadors.

PROJECTS

Evening @ Bras Basah 2008

This annual event is part of the SMU Ambassadors' initiative to share the SMU experience with parents. Parents are invited to visit the school grounds and experience life in SMU through interaction with our students, staff, faculty and alumni.

On 5th September, a total of 78 parents arrived for an evening of exciting programmes ranging from a mock lecture, which gives parents a taste of SMU's unique experience, to a tour of the state-of-the-art city campus. The event culminated with dinner and student performances at our very own student-run café – Treehouse. There is no better way of understanding the SMU life than to experience it first-hand!

SMU Hoodie Project

This project believes a small act can go a long way in showing unity and camaraderie.  It is an initiative started this year to foster a stronger sense of  team spirit within the SMU Community.

Designed with students, faculty and administrative staff in mind, we hope the school population will wear the hoodie to show a sense of belonging to the University.

The sale-proceeds from this not-for-profit venture will be used to fund various community service projects, including the setting up of SMU's first Textbook Fund, which will subsidise the cost of textbooks for the needy students.

Hoodies, in blue and white, are now available. Email asmu@smu.edu.sg.

Elephant Conservation and Elephant Nature Foundation, Chiang Mai Thailand

Project Elephant Nature Park is led by the SMU Ambassadors, as part of a new dimension of community service to include nature conservation. The project is currently in its second phase, with an expanded team of 15 students who will visit Chiangmai, Thailand in December 2007.

These volunteers will link up with Thailand's Elephant Nature Foundation to provide support, and aid in promoting awareness in Singapore regarding the plight of the Asian Elephant.

The inaugural phase was conducted in August 2007, and saw a team of five volunteers assisting in reforestation efforts, planting over 3000 tree saplings over seven days in the park.
