The annual University Student Life Awards (USLA) is a much anticipated event recognizing top student, faculty and staff contributors for their active participation and support of co-curriculum activities (CCAs) in SMU.
Graced by Guest-of-Honour President Professor Arnoud De Meyer, SMU senior management, faculty, as well as parents of award recipients, this year’s ceremony sported a Bollywood theme and featured a special dance performance by President Arnoud, faculty and staff members from a cross section of schools and offices.
While there was no winner for the University Student Life Individual Award this year, Aaron Lum Zhi Hao, Shaun Toh Hong Yi and Urmila Mandapaka were awarded the Excellence Award (Individual) for their outstanding achievements in the areas of Arts, Sports & Adventure and Student Leadership & Community Integration respectively.
In addition, two individuals were awarded the new AMLow Trailblazer Award, supported by our former Dean of Students, Associate Professor Low Aik Meng. The award recognises innovative students who have blazed the trail by spearheading and managing extraordinary initiatives to enhance the welfare of SMU students or the distinctiveness of SMU student life, support student integration efforts, or champion social or environmental causes locally or in overseas communities. Chuah Sun Soon was awarded for his eco-tourism initiative Bamboobee while Gary Lee Ruijie was awarded for his work with SMU Pendeza, an overseas community service project to Kenya which he founded in 2010.
Besides the AMLow Trailblazer Award, two other new awards were also introduced this year – the Lee Foundation Student Life Scholarship and the SMUAA CCA Award. A total of six students were awarded the Lee Foundation Student Life Scholarship sponsored by the Lee Foundation, which is granted to full-time undergraduates who have actively contributed to student life and showed good academic results despite coming from a modest financial background. The SMUAA CCA Award is sponsored by the SMU Alumni Association for the most outstanding CCA club in recognition for its contribution to actively engage and involve SMU Alumni in their activities and initiatives. The E.y.E Investment Club and SMU Floorball were the joint winners of this award.
