Special Interest and Community Services

The Special Interest and Community Service clubs fall under the auspices of the Special Interest and Community Service Sodality (SICS) student constituent body (CBd) which was set up in 2008. The body was formed to oversee the various CCA clubs founded to bring together people of various interests- gourmet, wine appreciation, board gaming, environmentalism, debating, fishing, mixed martial arts are some of the interests around which our clubs are centered. We also have clubs which focus on personal and professional development such as public speaking, social enterprise, networking, and exposure to international conferences and internships.

The other half of our sodality consists of community service (CS) clubs, which engage in both short term and long term projects, and span a wide range of beneficiaries – disadvantaged children, non-academically inclined teenagers, the elderly and the disabled. Many CS clubs have established long-term, recurring projects such as Rotaract Club's Project Sparkle and SMU Red Cross' A Truly Magical Christmas.

SICS has the mission to inculcate a sense of belonging and foster closer ties between it's Special Interest and Community Service clubs, through the integration of club activities under its purview. Among the signature events organised by SICS are the SICS Freshmen Camp, Name Tent Drive, Presidential Summit, Appreciation Night, and the bi-annual community service project, SMU Challenge.

SMU CHALLENGE

SMU Challenge is a signature SMU community engagement event organised by the Special Interest and Community Service Sodality (SICS). The project, first initiated in 2008 as a charity cyclethon, aims to bring the SMU Community together to give back to society through a community service project.

This year, SMU Challenge set out to raise money, food and daily necessities to help 1,000 elderly living in one-room HDB flats through their beneficiaries the Geylang East Home for the Aged and the Society of Moral Charities.

SMU Challenge 2010 involved three phases: 1) interaction sessions with the elderly as well as house clean-ups involving close to 80 staff and students; 2) an awareness-cum-fund-raising campaignwhich helped raise almost $39,000 in cash and $37,600 in food and daily necessities; and 3) a charity-walkathon, held on 10 October 2010 which involved 150 student leaders and 200 participants comprising SMU students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

SMU President Professor Arnoud De Meyer flagged off the walkathon at SMU, which saw some participants carrying loads of groceries, as part of the competitive category of the walkathon, along the nearly 7km route.

The participants finished with a celebration lunch with Guest-of-Honour, Mayor for Southeast CDC, Mr Matthias Yao Chih and some 300 elderly at the end point, Geylang East Home for the Aged.

SMU Challenge raised a total of $76,600 in cash, food and daily necessities, surpassing their target of $50,000. The event was also registered in the Singapore Book of Records with the title Most Number of People in a Mass Walk Carrying Groceries.

SICS looks forward to bringing the school together again in giving back to society with SMU Challenge 2012, and looks forward to leaving an even bigger impact than the last.
