Criteria for Successful Internship

The following information has been prepared to serve as a guide to assist you in establishing a successful internship. Please feel free to contact us regarding ideas, concerns, questions, or other inputs you may have.

Purpose
The internship should ideally be an integral part of your organisation; therefore, its purpose should be in line with your organisation's philosophy and practice and benefit your productivity, revenue, and staffing goals.

Supervision
Close communication with the students is a major factor in good internship. This can be ensured by assigning the students to a supervisor who will maintain close contact with the student's progress and will respond directly to any concerns that may arise.

Responsibilities
One of the initial steps in establishing an internship requires the provision of a clear description of the student's duties and responsibilities. In addition, a well-defined set of expectations in relation to the student's position should be provided; and the students should be treated as professionals in an on-the-job training programme/role.

Organisational Background, Structure, Practices
It is important that an internship programme includes formal or informal orientation, seminars, and meetings with management at various levels. This will provide a good forum for students to learn about the organisation's structure, practices, and goals.
