The community service attachment is part of the university's 12-week student internship program; 10 weeks of which students serve with a business organization and the other 2 weeks (or 80 hours) with a community, social or civic organization.
Why Community Service?
In grooming visionary entrepreneurs and global business leaders of tomorrow, Singapore Management University recognizes the importance of preparing our students to be responsible citizens, demonstrating leadership and integrity within the communities they live and work. We want our students to give back to society. To that end, the whole school-to-work transition is facilitated by a greater sense of responsibility.
What are the learning goals for Community Service?
Through community service, we hope to achieve the following:
- Acquaint students with career possibilities in the nonprofit sector.
- Develop qualities in students such as confidence, compassion and self-reliance.
- Help students acquire new skills, interests and knowledge.
- Help students to form habits of community service and volunteerism.
- Provide opportunities for students to be creative and to work as a team.
When can you begin your community service?
The community service attachment may be undertaken anytime during their course of study. For a breadth of experience, students can undertake community service with more than one organization, up to a maximum of three organizations.
How can you maximize your community service experience?
Go with a positive attitude. In the course of your service, reflect on your experience how you have been impressed and challenged by the community service attachment, what you have learned about yourself in the process, how your outlook on volunteerism has been shaped and your attitudes about future careers in social service. It is hoped that, once experienced and internalized, the community service exposure will become a lifelong commitment to volunteerism. |
