Institutional Review Board

Introduction

Singapore Management University (SMU)'s vision is to be a premier university, internationally recognized for its world-class research and distinguished teaching. In alignment with this vision, SMU aims to generate research that is not only scientifically sound but conducted with diligence and integrity and in full compliance with internationally established standards of research ethical principles. Therefore, similar to all major research universities in the world, SMU has set up a University-level Institutional Review Board (IRB) to review all research involving human subjects proposed by faculty (full-time or adjuncts), staff, and students affiliated with SMU.

Terms of Reference of the IRB

The mission of the IRB is to protect the rights, privacy, and welfare of human subjects who participate in research. To accomplish this mission, the IRB will perform the primary functions of education, review, approval, and monitoring with regard to adherence to established criteria of ethical practices in research. Specifically, the terms of reference for the IRB are as follows:

  1. educate all research investigators in the use of human subjects in research,
  2. review all proposed research involving human subjects before the research is initiated,
  3. approve, request modification, or disapprove research according to established criteria for protection of human subjects,
  4. monitor approved research to ascertain that human subjects are in fact protected, and
  5. submit annual reports on IRB statistics or any other relevant reports on IRB-related activities and events as requested by the SMU Provost.
