SMU is an autonomous university that is funded by the Singapore Government. It is the only management-oriented university in Singapore and is perceived by the public as a “modern, rising star.” It is highly prestigious and popular in Singapore and within Asia, attracting some 13,000 applicants for 1,500 places in 2007.
Students will receive a breakthrough fast-track programme that combines the best of both worlds: At SMU, an American-styled undergraduate pedagogy with a rigorous curriculum in Business Management and Information Systems Management that was developed in collaboration with two top-rated universities in the US – Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Carnegie Mellon University; at KAIST – one of the most prestigious institutions of research and higher learning in South Korea. Students will get to study from a choice of four postgraduate degree programmes at KAIST (Management Engineering, General MBA, Finance MBA and IT/Media MBA).
Students at SMU and KAIST will be taught by highly qualified and experienced professors, the majority of whom hold PhD qualifications from the world’s top universities.
SMU has created a unique learning environment for students to develop professional skills as well as the soft skills valued by employers. SMU’s small-class seminar rooms are designed to encourage class participation and develop presentation and leadership skills. SMU pedagogy is highly interactive. Students are immersed in active learning through class participation and many team projects. While students develop depth in their respective degree concentration (Business Management or Information Systems Management), the SMU degree also provides an American-style broad-based curriculum that produces graduates who are regarded by employers as “bold, confident and articulate".
SMU students can take second majors or double degrees. Information Systems Management students take a second major within the single degree, either within IS (Advanced Business Solutions with tracks in Business Intelligence and Banking & Trading Systems) or a choice from 15 non-IS double majors.
Business Management students can choose from 7 different business majors (Corporate Communication, Finance, Management, Marketing, Operations Management, Organisational Behaviour & Human Resources and Quantitative Finance) offered within the business school. On top of this, they can choose one of the 9 second major options available from outside the Business School.
Some students in either of the SMU degree programme may also qualify for a double degree, in which they do the full requirements for a second undergraduate degree from another SMU school. For example, a student who qualifies for a double degree might choose to get both a Bachelor of Business Management and a Bachelor of Science (Information Systems Management).
SMU’s acclaimed internship programme provides students with many opportunities to acquire real-world knowledge and practical work experience in a diversity of industries. Because Singapore is a global business hub, SMU students are often able to secure internships with many of the world’s leading multi-national corporations. Internships enhance a student’s competitive edge in the job market when they graduate. One in three SMU students completes two or more internships before graduation. Many of our students do overseas internships as well.
