The Class of 2007 received both practical advice and inspiration from the distinguished Guest of Honour, Mr Yong Pung How, who received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Drawing lessons from his wide-ranging experience, the former Chief Justice and Chairman of the Advisory Board of SMU’s School of Law advised the students of attitudes and behaviours that would be essential to success in any career: keeping the right company, doing serious work, and being adaptable to a changing environment.

"Life is about circumstances and opportunities. It is about rising to the occasion, and being ready for the tasks and social responsibilities you can take on…It's about how you can contribute to building something better for society as a whole…You make a living by what you get, and you make your life by what you give."

- Mr Yong Pung How at SMU commencement
