The SMU Plus Strategy is the driving force behind the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IIE) where entrepreneurial collaboration is open to anyone with a compelling innovation, within or outside of the SMU community. This extends to affiliates such as polytechnics, individual researchers, SMEs and large enterprises. Business mentors, serial entrepreneurs and angel investors are also invited to help startups build sustainable business models.
Launched by Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Manpower Mr Lee Yi Shyan on 3 September 2009, IIE has also pioneered Extrapreneurship where entrepreneurs co-found new businesses with students. Mr Lee is also the Minister-in-charge of Entrepreneurship. Monthly networking-cum-pitching events and speed dating sessions between investors and entrepreneurs will take place at the Entrepreneurs’ Corner. Innovation and Entrepreneurship Awards and a Distinguished Speaker Series are other initiatives by IIE.
To groom business leaders and creative entrepreneurs, SMU has introduced a new Entrepreneurship Major at the Lee Kong Chian School of Business and a new Technopreneurship Track under the Advanced Business Technology Major in the School of Information Systems. |
