Farewell, Bukit Timah

Highlights of a speech by SMU alumna Nurhana Binte Mohamad Taip, on the Symbolic Move of SMU to its city campus on 31 July

Dear friends,

When I first submitted my application for a place in SMU, we didn't have a school building. All there was...was a dream - a dream to chart our own path.

We could decide what we wanted for our university. We could shape our own history. We could set up our own clubs. We could take electives such as psychology and dance on top of the usual business modules. It was exciting, different and refreshing.

My final decision to go to a university that was just starting out was like taking a leap of faith. It was a risk, but a well thought out one. I went to SMU with my eyes wide open and it has been a decision that I do not regret.

Thankfully, I had my supporters. But even the supporters quavered once in awhile. My parents had a tough time explaining my decision to their friends. Why go for something that was not tried and tested?

What if it failed? What if you waste your time and money? And when I had difficulty getting financial assistance, their support was critically tested. Thankfully, we overcame that hurdle.

Like all start-ups, the university faced obstacles but we coped. SMU has since grown from strength to strength. Within an extremely short span of five years, we have set ourselves apart and made a name for ourselves.

We started off with just over 300 undergraduates. From a cozy two-storey building at Evans, we moved to the historic Bukit Timah campus in the new academic year of 2001. From six seminar rooms, we had 35. From a campus with a single storey library the size of two classrooms, we moved to one at the Bukit Timah campus with a library three stories high, complete with project rooms and a café.

Indeed, there are many special memories. And like the pioneers, who had to leave behind the Evans 'campus', you too may feel reluctant to leave this beautiful place. But a university is more than just a building or a place of business. It is about the people.

I am confident that the spirit of SMU will continue to live on. And no matter where you are - whether you're at the Bukit Timah campus or the city campus, whether you're in Singapore or in China, whether you're students or alumni, you are SMU.

Janice Bellace, our first SMU president gave this quote: "Success is a journey, not a destination." I have learnt so much from my SMU journey and that has made me into the person that I am today. It is a defining success in my life. And now, as we prepare to move to the city campus, it will be well to repeat her words - "Success is a journey, not a destination."

I wish you a personally rewarding journey - let's move!
