Through an initiative generated by the SMU Student Association two new student run cafés opened on campus in August 2008. With the intention of encouraging student entrepreneurship and business opportunities, students were invited to tender business proposals for the use of the recently vacated Student Recreation Centre (SMU Concourse) and the Student Lounge located on the second floor of the School of Information Systems. The Concourse-located café-bar Screme has already proved a success for its five owners, and a reputation for serving the best coffee on campus. Set up as a retro, vintage-style club lounge, Treehouse was designed to offer good food and live entertainment while making the most of its enviable view. Treehouse has floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides looking out over the National Museum and Campus Green.
