David CHAN, Interim Dean, School of Social Sciences and Professor of Psychology, was appointed Chairman of the International Advisory Panel to the National Addictions Management Centre and National Council of Problem Gambling, and a member of the international committee formed to develop measures of national well-being. He was also invited to speak at the XXIXth International Congress of Psychology (World Congress) in Berlin, Germany; Conference on The New Science of Happiness and Well-Being in Singapore from 16-17 April 2008; and 23rd Annual Conference of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology in San Francisco, USA, 10-12 April 2008.

Giorgos CHELIOTIS, Visiting Assistant Professor of Information Systems, was an invited speaker at the Institute of Information Science of the Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan on 17 January 2008, and at the International Workshop on Asia and Commons in the Information Age (ACIA) held in Taipei on 19-20 January 2008.

John DAVIS, Practice Associate Professor of Marketing and Director of the Centre for Marketing Excellence, presented the keynote address to the Asia Financial Services Network on 21 February 2008.

David DING, Practice Associate Professor of Finance, has been appointed Co-Director of the Master of Science in Applied Finance (China). He will co-direct with Professor of Finance Chunchi WU.

HU Nan, Assistant Professor of Information Systems, was an invited speaker at the Business Analytics Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 28 January 2008.

Kenneth G. HUANG, Assistant Professor of Management, received the 2007 INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences) Technology Management Section Best Dissertation Award (Runner-up).

Annie KOH, Associate Dean, Lee Kong Chian School of Business School and Dean, Office of Executive and Professional Education (including Financial Training Institute), has been announced as Academic Director for the International Trading Institute@SMU. She also moderated The Enterprise Conference on 17 April 2008 and was invited to speak at The 2nd Annual Asian Family Office Conference on 29 April 2008.

Raj KOMARAN, Practice Associate Professor of Management, has been appointed External Examiner for Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Diploma in Business Studies (International Business Option) in its School of Business and Accountancy for the academic years 2007/2008 and 2008/2009. He was also a guest speaker with Gilbert TAN, Practice Associate Professor of Management, at the “Business Case Development: Enhancement of Business School Education in Vietnam” Workshop in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on 28 and 30 January 2008 respectively.

LI Yingjiu, Assistant Professor of Information Systems was an invited speaker at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Sharjah, UAE on 16 April 2008.

Thomas MENKHOFF, Practice Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour, was the invited Keynote Speaker at the Annual Work Planning Meeting of the World Bank South Asia External Affairs Team (SAREX), Bangkok, Thailand on 2-6 March 2008, and Co-Chair and a speaker at the Fourth International Research Conference on Asian Business in Singapore on 24-25 March 2008.

Steven MILLER, Dean, School of Information Systems; Practice Professor of Information Systems, was an invited panelist at the Technology & Operations Council Annual Meeting of the Asian Banker Summit 2008 in Hanoi, Vietnam on 17 March 2008.

S. Chandra MOHAN, Practice Associate Professor of Law, has been appointed to The Singapore Academy of Law’s Legal Heritage Committee; a Member of the Advisory Board of Singapore Law Watch, and a Member of the Tribunal for the Maintenance of Parents.

Narayan RAMASUBBU, Assistant Professor of Information Systems, was invited to present a paper in a special session at the 1st India Software Engineering Conference (ISEC2008) in Hyderabad, India on 20 February 2008.

Venky SHANKARARAMAN, Practice Associate Professor of Information Systems, was an invited speaker at the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology, Reserve Bank of India in Hyderabad on 18 January 2008. He also conducted a Service Oriented Architecture Workshop organised by RA Knowledge Forums Pvt Ltd, Mumbai, India, for professionals from various Indian-based companies and organisations between 25-29 February 2008.

Kirpal SINGH, Associate Professor of English Literature, chaired the American Creativity Associations 2008 International Conference ‘Creativity Across Cultures’ in Singapore from 25-29 February 2008.

Augustine TAN, Practice Professor of Economics, was invited to speak at the KPMG Budget Seminar 2008 in Singapore on 20 February 2008.

Eugene K.B. TAN, Assistant Professor of Law, has concluded a study, with the support of the United States Department of Homeland Security National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START). The research was published as the lead article in volume 19(4) of the journal Terrorism and Political Violence. Assistant Professor Tan was also a member of the Global Taskforce that drafted the ‘Principles for Responsible Management Education’ (PRME) under the auspices of the UN Global Compact, which was launched at the 2007 Global Compact Leaders Summit in Geneva.

TAN Swee Liang, Co-Director of SMU’s Centre for Teaching and Learning, has been promoted to Practice Associate Professor of Economics.

THAM Chee Ho, Associate Professor of Law, was invited to present a paper at the Exploring Contract Law symposium organised by the University of Western Ontario, Canada, on 10-11 January 2008.

DISTINGUISHED TERM PROFESSOR OF ECONOMICS

Professor Peter C.B. Phillips has been appointed the Distinguished Term Professor of Economics in SMU’s School of Economics. During the three-year appointment Professor Phillips will explore and undertake research with SMU faculty and students, teach econometrics in SOE’s postgraduate programmes and give advice  on  SOE’s  research  strategies  and  postgraduate   programmes,   especially
the PhD.

Professor Phillips is the Sterling Professor of Economics and Professor of Statistics at Yale University. He is the founder and Editor of Econometric Theory and founding Editor of Themes in Modern Econometrics for Cambridge University Press. He is an elected Fellow of the Econometric Society, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the Journal of Econometrics, the American Statistical Association, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Modeling and Simulation Society of Australia and New Zealand, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He has also been ranked number one in leading econometrics and economics journals.
