An exhibition of 25 prominent paintings of social, national and political developments in Singapore by renowned eye surgeon Professor Arthur Lim were presented at SMU’s
Gallery on 20 February 2008. Each work is a personal commentary and observation of events covering the past two decades. Pieces such as Owl, Sterile City, Generation Gap, Caning and impressions of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and the late David Marshall, were exhibited for the first time in more than 10 years. The exhibition was opened by Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and
Sports.
An avid painter and art collector, Professor Lim is held in high regard as an eye surgeon and philanthropist. He has contributed much to society through his work in developing ophthalmology training and treatment.
“Professor Lim once noted that the more educated, determined and positive the values of the people of a nation, the greater the ability of a nation to move towards greater achievement…He translates his thoughts on issues of the day on canvas in ways that encourage viewers to continue a dialogue on issues of the time.”
– Professor Howard Hunter, President of SMU.
