Four years young

President. Tug-Of-War. Awards. Gazebos. Bungee Trampoline. Feather
Boas. Ambassadors. Foam. Drums. Food. Mardi Gras.

Disparate and colourful elements combined together for one fun-filled day and night, as the Bukit Timah campus’s Upper Quadrangle was transformed into a vibrant setting for SMU’s birthday party on 16 January. Patron’s Day 2004 marked the fourth annual visit to campus by SMU Patron, HE Mr SR Nathan, President of the Republic of Singapore. Certain formalities notwithstanding, the atmosphere for SMU’s birthday celebration was festive and exuberant – becoming of a dynamic University that is four years young.

In addition to the presence of President Nathan, the occasion was graced by Dr Richard Hu, Chancellor, SMU and Mr Ho Kwon Ping, Chairman, SMU, as well as parents of the

student body, who all joined in the fun.

A regular part of the Patron’s Day programme, SMU students who have excelled in co-curricular activities were duly recognised and awarded for their brilliant non-academic achievements. This year’s ceremonies also saw the investiture of the new SMU Student Ambassadors.

Competitions, dances and music filled the quad, which was lined with student-run booths and hawkers selling varieties of foods, crafts and clothing. A bungee trampoline, meanwhile, catapulted “willing bodies” skyward – including the SMU chairman. And as day faded into night, the music got louder, the crowd grew larger and the foam machines started to bubble.
Happy Birthday, SMU!
