Accountancy kick-starts scholarship fund

A “debit card” for $100,000 was presented by Visa International Asia Pacific at SMU Patron’s Day 2003 for the School of Accountancy Scholarship Fund.

The School of Accountancy has set up a scholarship fund for students who are in, or applying to, its bachelor’s degree programme. Known as the School of Accountancy Financial Scholarship Fund, its aim is to alleviate the financial burden of needy students.

The School has encountered cases of students encumbered with financial difficulties, with the number of those having increased since the economic down-turn. Such financial difficulties affect students’ academic performance, causing some even to forgo their educational pursuit. While there are a number of financial scholarships available to students – including study loans that cover 80% of tuition fees – for some families, even the remaining costs can prove a significant burden.

The School of Accountancy Scholarship will provide financial support to help cover the
students’ daily expenses for up to four years of study at SMU – a sum of about $2,500 per year. To qualify for the Scholarship, students must have a monthly family income of less than $2,000; admission application points (SMU’s system) of not less than 30 points; and for scholarship holders, reasonable academic results maintained throughout their programme.

The School believes the Scholarship will alleviate the financial burden of needy students who have the potential to do well and who can go on to contribute to the economy and society in the future. “We hope that the scheme will provide an avenue to build up a caring and and compassionate culture within the School of Accountancy and SMU, one that will lead our alumni to continue in the same tradition,” said Associate Professor Pang Yang Hoong, Dean, School of Accountancy.

To date, term donations have been raised from accounting faculty and external donors.
A target endowment of $1 million has been set, to fund eight financial scholarships per year in perpetuity, and with the help of a few m nent, the Fund is well on its way to reaching its target.
