The School of Business organised a topic/theme
-focused conference called “Managing Emerging Technologies in Asia” 2-3 November. Preparation for the conference began in July 2003 with a call for paper submission.
The Chairman of the Organising and Advisory Committee, Visiting Professor Oscar Hauptman, School of Business, SMU, was pleased with the quality of the presentations and speakers. The METiA 2003 conference was attended by 57 local and overseas researchers/participants with a total of 18 papers presented over 6 sessions in the following thematic areas:
• Biotechnology: Evolution and Social Issues
• Universities and Research Parks Linkages for
Emerging Technologies
• Intellectual Property and Partnering for Emerging Technologies
• Computers and Telecommunication: Diffusion
and Knowledge Flow
• Government Policies for Emerging Technologies
• SMEs and Emerging Technologies

The conference also featured two plenary sessions. Professor Arnoud De Meyer, INSEAD France, presented a paper on “Innovation Management in Asia: Insights from an Exploratory Study”, while Dr Gurinder S Shahi of BioEnterprise Asia, Singapore spoke on “Understanding the BioBusiness Landscape in Asia: Identifying Opportunities for Innovation and Value Creation”.
A special issue of the journal Technological Forecasting and Social Change will be devoted to the theme of the Conference and will feature selected papers. Publication is expected late
2004 or early 2005.
