SMU Economics Graduates Top In Salaries

SMU graduates have continued to impress employers with their confidence, business savvy and experience gleaned from industry and overseas exposure

SMU economics graduates topped all other graduates across the three universities here in starting salaries, according to this year’s Graduate Employment Survey released by the Ministry of Education. Economics graduates of SMU with Cum Laude or better are earning an average monthly salary of $4,164.

SMU has achieved, for the fifth straight year, a close to 100% employment rate. 96% of all graduates who responded to the survey found jobs before graduation or within six months of graduation.

The annual study surveyed 820 SMU alumni who graduated between May and September 2008, achieving an 86% response rate.

Across all degree programmes, average monthly starting salaries of those who graduated Cum Laude or better are $3,610. The top 20% wage earners among those who achieved Cum Laude or better are enjoying a high average monthly starting salary of $5,993.

“We are pleased to know that our graduates of 2008 are still doing well despite the global financial meltdown which has seriously impacted the job market. Employment rate remains close to 100% with a significant number getting job offers before graduation. We believe many of our graduates have been proactive in job hunting and remained resilient, with many seizing the many career networking opportunities organised by SMU and availing themselves our individual career counseling service,” said Mrs Ruth Chiang, Director of Career Services, SMU.

SMU graduates are consistently getting multiple job offers. Close to two-thirds (62%) received two to more than ten job offers.
