A new Centre for Dispute Resolution at the School of Law will promote and strengthen Singapore’s position as a dispute resolution venue of choice in Asia. Launched in April 2009 and headed by Practice Associate Professor of Law Ian Macduff, a professional mediator and negotiator with over 25 years of experience in this field, the centre will study the different legal-political structures and cultural attitudes to conflict management and resolution from an Asian perspective.

Guided by an International Advisory Board, the centre will be dedicated to research, teaching and outreach through activities such as conferences, roundtable discussions, collaborative research, publications, cross-disciplinary teaching, internships, handson clinics, practitioner seminars and online dispute resolution. New emerging areas of alternative dispute resolution such as WTO dispute settlement, international peace negotiations, Islamic arbitration, cross-border disputes between nations and civilian conflict management will also be explored.

One integral focus is the building of close working relationships with professional bodies such as the Maxwell Chambers, the Singapore Mediation Centre, the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators and overseas universities with dispute resolution expertise.
