STERLING PERFORMANCE AT BUSINESS COMPETITIONS

SMU students have conspicuously done well at business competitions in Singapore and overseas since the beginning of the academic year. First place honours in the Code:XtremeApps competition and Singapore’s CapitaLand Marketing Awards in September 2007, and Tata Crucible Business Quiz in October 2007, were preceded by a second place in Thailand at the Thammasat Undergraduate Business Challenge in August 2007.

Following their win over close to 100 teams in the Singapore CapitaLand Marketing Awards, the three-woman team from SMU–comprising Zhang Xuwen, Yow Enning and Lee Wan Jun–went on to be second runner-up in Changsha, China, against the six Chinese City Champions on 12 October 2007. The competition gave the students an opportunity to take theory out of the classroom and to formulate realistic business strategies with creativity.

The Code:XtremeApps competition is a 24-hour computer programming competition launched by SMU in September 2007 to instill interest in computer programming among students and working professionals. The winning team, Muhammad bin Mohsin, Jonathan Zhan and entrepreneur Jacqueline Choo, will travel to Googleplex, Google’s headquarters in California, USA, in 2008 on an all-expense paid trip valued at S$15,000.
