FACULTY HIGHLIGHTS

Andre BONFRER, has been promoted to Associate Professor of Marketing with the granting of tenure in the Lee Kong Chian School of Business.

David CHAN, Interim Dean, School of Social Sciences, has been appointed Vice Provost (Research and Graduate Studies).

Robert DENG, Professor of Information Systems and Director of the SIS Research Centre, received funding from A*STAR, SERC Intelligent Energy Distribution Systems for a three-year joint research project.

Terence FAN, Assistant Professor of Management, has had a paper nominated for the Strategic Management Society Best Conference Paper Prize.

KAM Tin Seong, Practice Associate Professor of Information Systems, has been appointed faculty advisor for the SAS Enterprise Intelligence Laboratory (SEIL) at SMU.

Annie KOH, Associate Professor of Finance, was an invited speaker at the UBS Diversity Conference 2008 on 18 April; and the SMU-Ministry of Manpower “The Living Strategy – Putting People at the Heart of Corporate Purpose Public Forum on 16 May.

Benedict KOH, Practice Associate Professor of Finance had his research recommendations from a collaboration paper adopted by CPF, Singapore.

LAU Hoong Chuin, Associate Professor of Information Systems, was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Fellow for Research Excellence for 2007.

LEONG Kwong Sin, Associate Professor of Accounting, was appointed as a member of the Singapore Medical Council’s Complaints Panel from 2008 to 2010.

Roger LOH returned to SMU as Assistant Professor of Finance on 1 July 2008.

Roberto MARIANO, Dean of the School of Economics, has been appointed Director of SMU’s Sim Kee Boon Institute of Financial Economics.

Mahdev MOHAN, Lecturer in Law will be attending Stanford Law School on a Fulbright Scholarship. He was awarded a Stanford Programme in International Legal Studies Fellowship for 2008.

ONG Siow Heng, Practice Associate Professor of Corporate Communications, has been appointed Associate Dean (Admissions/Undergraduates) of the Lee Kong Chian School of Business.

Kevin OW Yong returned to SMU as Assistant Professor of Accounting on 1 July 2008.

Jialie SHEN, Assistant Professor of Information Systems, is the recipient of the Lee Foundation Fellowship for Research Excellence.

Kirpal SINGH, Associate Professor of English Literature, has been appointed Director of the Wee Kim Wee Centre.

Themin SUWARDY, Practice Professor of Accounting jointly developed a webinar, in collaboration with the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority of Singapore (ACRA), to aid Extensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL). The webinar has been released by the professional accounting body CPA Australia. He was also awarded a USD25,000 grant by the IAAER/ACCA Grant Program for Research on International Accounting Education Standards with his RMIT collaborators Dr Paul De Lange and Dr Beverly Jacking.

Eugene K.B. TAN, Assistant Professor of Law, was on the advisory panel for the Ministry of Manpower (under the auspices of the ASEAN Secretariat) commissioned Mercer’s study on “Progressive Labour Practices to Enhance the Competitiveness of ASEAN”.

TAN Teck Meng, Professor of Accounting, was appointed as a member of the Committee for Societies, Accounting Standards Council. He also serves as a Council Member on the Accounting Standards Committee.

Andrew WHITE, Associate Professor of Law, has been re-appointed as a Senior Fellow in the Melbourne Law School at The University of Melbourne, Australia.

Prof Marshall W. MEYER

HO BEE PROFESSOR IN CHINESE ECONOMY AND BUSINESS

Professor Marshall W. MEYER has been appointed the Ho Bee Professor in Chinese Economy and Business in the Lee Kong Chian School of Business. He is currently conducting several research projects in China, including one on the transformation, strategy, and structure of Chinese state-owned enterprises. Professor Meyer presented the inaugural Ho Bee Professor in Chinese Economy and Business Lecture titled “Challenges for Chinese Champions” on 9 July 2008.

Professor Meyer is also the Richard A. Sapp Professor of Management in The Wharton School, Professor of Sociology, Associate Member of the Center for East Asian Studies and Head of the Wharton School China Research Initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania. He has taught at leading universities including Harvard University, Cornell University and Yale University, and has been a visiting professor in the Faculty of Business Administration at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University, and the School of Business and Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.


Prof Phillip PHAN

TOMMIE GOH VISITING PROFESSOR IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND BUSINESS

Professor Phillip PHAN has been appointed the Tommie Goh Visiting Professor in Entrepreneurship and Business in the Lee Kong Chian School of Business. Visiting SMU from 16 June – 20 July 2008, Professor Phan worked with faculty and gave a public lecture titled “How to be a Successful Entrepreneur” on 28 July 2008.

Professor Phan is also the Warren H. Bruggeman ‘46 and Pauline Urban Bruggeman Distinguished Professor of Management at The Lally School of Management & Technology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. He was the 2004/2005 Haniel Foundation Visiting Professor at Humboldt University in Berlin and 2006/2007 Bosch Public Policy Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin. He currently instructs students on a wide range of areas including strategic management, networks and alliances, technological entrepreneurship and corporate governance in emerging economies and has previously consulted with businesses and organisations such as the World Bank, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Singapore Institute of Directors, Malaysian Institute of Corporate Governance, Singapore Airlines, the Ministry of Finance of Thailand, and various technology start-ups and venture capitalists.

PANG Yang Hoong, Dean of the School of Accountancy and Vice Provost (Undergraduate) has been promoted to Professor of Accounting with the granting of tenure. She was also re-appointed as a Board Member of ACRA and was appointed into the ACRA HR Committee.
 
STEVEN MILLER, Practice Professor of the School of Information Systems, has a renewed appointment as Dean of the School of Information Systems until 2013.
