Research recommendations from Practice Associate Professor of Finance Benedict Koh and a commissioned study completed by the School of Accountancy’s Professor Pang Yang Hoong, Practice Associate Professor Themin Suwardy and Associate Professor Leong Kwong Sin, have been well received by policy makers and businesses in Singapore.
Recommendations from the working paper “Cost Structures of Investment Offerings in Singapore’s Central Provident Fund” undertaken by Benedict Koh, Olivia S. Mitchell (Professor of Insurance & Risk Management and Business and Public Policy, The Wharton School) and Joelle Fong (Doctoral Student, The Wharton School) have resulted in the creation of a web-based calculator for the Central Provident Fund (CPF) which permits members to compute the expenses associated with alternative investment holdings. The practical application of the paper’s recommendation highlights the real world possibilities of academic endeavours. The paper, published on Knowledge@SMU, has received much attention and become recommended reading within the pensions and investment industries.
The findings of the School of Accountancy study conducted in March and April this year of audit committee members of listed companies, and commissioned by the Audit Committee Guidance Committee (ACGC) of Singapore, were recently released and will become a practical guide for audit committee members. The key issues highlighted include challenges related to the internal governance of companies, particularly family-owned companies; the need to keep abreast with developments and changes in laws and regulations; and the need for members to upgrade their knowledge in the areas of accounting and finance.
