Discovering A Different U

Prospective applicants curious about the much talked about seminar-style pedagogy of SMU experienced it for themselves during simulated mock seminars at the SMU Open House on 6 and 7 March. Faculty demonstrated how the innovative, broad-based curriculum is delivered at SMU where professors and students engage in highly interactive discussions in small ‘MBA-like’ classes.

The two-day event drew an overwhelming crowd of over 6,000, resulting in standing room only for the many briefings and talks held at the Administration Building over the weekend. Along with hourly campus tours, student performances and CCA showcase, applicants got more than a glimpse of what life at SMU is like.

A refreshing new look has been given to the admissions website, www.smu.edu.sg/admissions, where visitors can be taken on a virtual campus tour by SMU undergraduates to acquaint themselves with all aspects of the University from the signature MBA-style seminar rooms, the library, the only-one-of-its-kind campus green in the city, the connecting underground concourse, recreational spots such as the gymnasium and swimming pool to the Prinsep hostel.

SMU offers six Bachelor’s degree programmes – Accountancy, Business Management, Economics, Information Systems Management, Law and Social Sciences – with flexibility for double degree and second majors in any combination for those with the right aptitude and interest.

Academic studies at SMU are complemented by the 10-week internship and 80 hours community service programme. While the former exposes undergraduates to real working life, helping them achieve a head start in career and gain valuable business networks, the latter builds character and develops compassion for the communities, instilling social and ethical responsibility.

There are opportunities for global exposure for every student at SMU. These come in the form of overseas internship and community service, Business Study Missions, overseas exchange and international conferences and competitions.

Outstanding students are recognised and rewarded with bond-free scholarships awarded by SMU, donor organisations and partner philanthropists.

The University Scholars Programme is a new co-terminal scholarship awarded to top freshmen to pursue a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in five years. A specially-designed foundation curriculum, modeled after liberal arts colleges, will stretch their critical thinking and reasoning skills, and their people and leadership potential. Opportunities such as overseas exposure, research assistantships, cross-disciplinary seminars on global issues and close tutorship by faculty promise an enriching learning experience.

The Lee Kong Chian Scholars Programme challenges those thriving on enterprise, spirit and adventure where scholars do double degrees with Business Management as one of the two. The scholarship has a special emphasis on holistic character development with a heart for the community, paying homage to the entrepreneurial spirit of the late philanthropist Lee Kong Chian.

One in eight freshmen for the new intake stands a chance of getting a scholarship while one in five freshmen can benefit from bursaries, financial grants and a wide range of financial assistance such as study abroad loans, computer loans and study awards. SMU is committed to a needs-blind admissions policy. Our doors are always open to students with financial difficulty to explore avenues of obtaining financial help.

Talents of Tomorrow

More than 70 employers held out promises of lucrative careers in the public sector, consultancy, retail, media, hospitality, financial houses, banks, events management, IT, real estate management, energy and commodities at the SMU Career Summit 2010. The two-day event on 24 and 25 February brought recruiters and 600 graduating SMU students together for intensive networking and talent scouting sessions. Adding razzle-dazzle to the event was the refreshing Talent Showcase where SMU undergraduates turned fashion models for one day, togged out in latest corporate and casual wear sponsored by Wing Tai Holdings. A specially choreographed catwalk impressed on employers the all-rounded dynamism, creativity, professionalism and versatility behind the SMU graduate who has enjoyed a broad-based education and possesses a strong sense of social responsibility and global perspectives through overseas and real-world exposure, A heart-warming dance segment between SMU students and children with special needs brought out the strong relationship the University has with the social sector, built up over the years through the Community Service Programme for undergraduates.
