[24 July 2000]
Singapore Managment University Matriculation
Day
Innovative Pioneer Undergraduates will
bid for courses using e-dollars
Innovation is the keyword as SMU's
pioneer batch of undergraduates start registering
for courses on Matriculation Day on Monday, 24 July
2000.
The day-long Matriculation procedure
will introduce students to various aspects of student
life at SMU, including a "bidding" system for course
modules using e-dollars. Students will also be conducted
around IT facilities and guided through admission
and financial matters at the university's interim
campus on Evans Road.
The "Bidding" System for Course
Modules
The bidding system for courses is a Wharton practice
adopted for SMU students. First year undergraduates
are automatically enrolled in three core courses
in the first semester. Students who wish to enroll
for up to a maximum of five courses allowed in each
term, may bid for these courses using their e-dollars.
Dollars not used this term will be carried forward
to the following term.
Financial & Admission
Matters
The first stage of Matriculation is the payment of
fees. Students who have applied successfully for
financial assistance will also settle such procedures
at the start of the day. Application for lockers
and bus passes are also completed at this stage.
Students can also apply for lockers
and bus passes at the start of the matriculation
process.
Student Leaders Training
Camp
All SMU students will have the opportunity to be
actively involved in decision-making processes and
to develop leadership skills. The Office of Student
Life has planned a student leadership training camp
from 4-6 August 2000. Students intending to take
up leadership positions will be encouraged to register
for this camp on a voluntary basis.
IT Facilities
IT and e-Business feature prominently in SMU's curriculum.
One main focus will be virtual learning via IT
avenues. Multi-media content such as video, slides,
voice and lecture notes will be gradually disseminated
through electronic means. During Matriculation,
SMU undergraduates will be given the keys to unlock
doors to the internet-linked world. These include
passwords, lifetime email accounts and student
accounts. These IT resources will be introduced
with a hands-on session conducted by the Office
of Communications & Information Technology.
Inaugural Opening Convocation
Preparations
SMU's official launch is on Saturday, 29 July. Preparations
are underway for the grand Inaugural Opening Convocation
Ceremony at Bras Basah Park. As part of the proceedings,
male undergraduates will be issued with an SMU tie
each and women students, an SMU scarf. These specially
designed accessories will be worn at the Inaugural
Ceremony. Student volunteers will conduct scarf-tying
demonstrations throughout Matriculation day. |
