Welcome Message

Dean School of Law

Dear Students,

I would like to welcome you as the second group to enter the exciting new School of Law at SMU. We all hope you will have a very enjoyable, interesting and successful time here.

University can be and should be a very exciting and important step forward in your lives. You will learn many things here and make many friends who will remain with you for the rest of your lives. Remember that your success here depends above all on you. Work hard but at the same time take advantage of everything else that SMU has to offer.

You are about to enter on the study of law. For nearly all of you, this will be a major new step. Be prepared for surprises and difficulties. Getting used to the way lawyers think and argue takes time.

A successful modern society like Singapore needs a strong and effective legal system. Such a system cannot work without first class lawyers. Such lawyers need both the knowledge and technical skills to operate within the system and the integrity and the humanity to serve the system and their clients well. Our programme aims to develop all these qualities.
