Welcome Message

Why SMU-Economics …

Congratulations on choosing to join our SMU-Economics program. With great pleasure I welcome you on behalf of the faculty, staff, and current students. We look forward to getting to know you better in the coming months of your first year. We are ready to assist you as you embark on your university experience.

The current financial turmoil in global markets points to the importance of understanding economics in making decisions in your professional as well as your personal life. Where one country worries about the fallout of sub-prime mortgages, another country struggles with poverty and unemployment. Where some countries sell oil, other countries buy oil. What is the impact of oil prices on a national budget? How are markets affected by currency fluctuations? Is the United States in a recession? Will there be a global recession? Economics will provide a solid foundation for developing a way of thinking about these issues.

The study of economics requires hard work. Certain skills are common to successful undergraduate economics programs around the world including SMU Economics:

  • developing a logical framework for solving problems
  • learning to source data and to effectively analyse data
  • developing the ability to present ideas convincingly, in writing and speaking

Acquire and hone these skills and you will find your study of economics at SMU enjoyably challenging and rewarding. You will develop skills with lifelong value.

What you learn in a class is part of the foundation of understanding economics. Even if a class poses difficulties, even if you are not interested in the topic but must take a class, keep an open mind. Even when formulas seem difficult, consider the ways in which quantitative techniques are used in economics. The respect you nurture for such topics will pay off. You will understand the ways in which economists in different areas of the profession look at a problem. It will help you gain perspective, and this is a helpful tool in all disciplines. Above all, give yourself the power to understand another point of view.

An exciting part of university life will be those unpredictable sources of enjoyment and inspiration. You might meet new friends with whom you energetically debate topical issues. You might have a professor whose passion for teaching economics and doing research inspires you. Look for these surprises.

Look for these surprises.

Take chances by taking on new challenges. Go the extra distance in doing research for your projects. Engage yourself productively in this learning process by preparing for and participating in classes. This time in your life is truly special, that proverbial fleeting moment in time.

Economists learn to make choices. Choose to make the most of this time in your life.

I welcome you warmly to SMU Economics!
