AY 2008 Matriculation Exercise
The Office of Career Services prepares SMU students to be socially responsible citizens, individuals equipped with skills sets and attributes that employers seek in a prospective intern or potential hire.
Community Service involvement is the prelude to this journey.
Through active participation in Community Service projects, amongst others, you will embrace and exercise SMU's 6 core (CIRCLE) values: Commitment, Integrity, Responsibility, Collegiality, Leadership and Excellence.
As part of your academic curriculum for fulfillment of degree requirements, all undergraduates have to complete 12 weeks of internship, comprising 10 weeks with a business organisation, and two weeks (or 80 hours) with community, social or civic organisation for community service attachments.
Community Service is compulsory . Embarking on your Community Service projects and endeavouring to fulfil the minimum 80 hours during your freshman year not only helps you develop appreciation for social and humanitarian causes, it enables you to manage your work load more effectively during your 1st year. A significant number of your seniors has completed more than 300 hours of community service! Emulate them, and find out what makes them tick!
Come visit the OCS station during Matriculation and participate in one of our many Community Service Projects, organised especially with you in mind. At the OCS station, you will need to:
- Register for the OCS Orientation Exercise held in July for all local freshmen & August for all international freshmen.
- Attend at least one compulsory Volunteerism Talk. There is a talk scheduled on the hour, every hour.
- Sign up for one of the major projects lined up for you.
- Embark on a Community Service project between July and December 2008, and endeavour to fulfill the minimum 80 hours within your freshmen year.
