1. Where can I find the course information?
Please go to Undergraduate Student Information for course information. You will find the list of courses with course outlines that is being offered at SMU during each academic year in the respective school's Excel file. Courses for the upcoming semester will be updated as and when they are available. Other relevant information such as the student handbook, academic calendar, class and examination timetable are also provided in this website. General guide, students choose between 3-4 courses to comprise a full time load for one semester.
2.
Where can I find the course description?
The outlines of all courses are located in the course list of each school. You can locate the course list at Undergraduate Student Information under Course Offerings for (respective academic year). By clicking on the instructor's name, you will see the outline of the course. If an instructor's name is not hyperlinked, it means he / she has yet to upload the outlines online. In the meantime, if you require the outlines urgently for course / credit approval from your university, you may wish to check the course list of the previous year to see if the course was offered then via Course Catalogue / Class Search function. If so, you may use the course outline as a benchmark.
3. What does the numbers "0", "1", "7" mean in the course catalogue?
If you see "0" next to a course, it means that it will not be held during that term. If you see "1" next to a course, it means that 1 session (class) will be held during the term. If you see "7" next to a course, it means that 7 sessions (classes) will be open during the term. When you make your course selection, you have to indicate which session you'd like to attend. Different sessions have different time-slots and / or instructors.
4. Which courses are open to exchange students?
A list of courses open to exchange students will be sent via email 6-8 weeks before the start of the semester.
5. In the class timetable, it states that a course has G1(1) and G1(2). What does it mean?
These groups are given numbers to represent the different time slots in which they will be held. For instance, G1 means in Group 1, and G1 (1) and G1 (2) are two halves of the 3-hr G1 course. You must attend both sessions. When you select a course that is split into two 1 ½ hour sessions, you have to make sure the schedules of both sessions do not clash with your other selected courses and groups.
6. I notice that there is a Modified Term 2 in SMU. What does that mean?
In addition to the regular spring term, SMU offers courses during the Modified Term 2. 80% of the courses offered during the Modified Term are from the School of Accountancy. The needful will have to be done to ensure your student pass sufficiently covers you till the end of your studies during the Modified Term.
Difference between Regular Term 2 and Modified Term 2:
Regular Term (Term II 2010-11): 3 January 2011 - 19 April 2011
Modified Term (Term II 2010-11): 21 February 2011 - 5 June 2011
Academic Implications:
- Exchange students are permitted to take courses in the Modified Term.
- Exchange students are permitted to take courses in the Regular Term as well as in the Modified Term, as long as there are NO class & examination timetable clashes.
- The Accounting courses which are offered in the Modified Term are marked with a (*) in the course list under the School of Accountancy .
Courses which are marked with a (*) are only offered in the Modified Term. These courses will NOT be offered in the Regular Term during Term II.
