About Us

Our Organisational Framework

The SMU Business Innovations Generator (SMU BIG) will incubate business innovations into start ups. We emphasize incubating business innovations and not merely technology innovations. Business innovations create value for their customers while technology innovations merely enable business innovations. This function will assemble a roster of business mentors that can benefit SMU’s stakeholders. Click here to access the SMU BIG website. This function will vet, protect and monetize intellectual property created by the students, faculty and staff of SMU. It will also help other stakeholders with access to expertise. SMU IIE will work with SMEs and large enterprises to outsource their innovation related R&D to SMU and our Academic Affiliates (such as the 5 Polytechnics, ITE and INSEAD). This function will train SMU’s stakeholders in I&E related topics. Such training will be delivered in the form of academic and industry focused courses and programmes. Some of the programmes will lead to certifications. This function involves SMU’s contribution to NRF’s efforts to establish an ecosystem for early stage venture capital in Singapore. It is the early stage VCs who will help accelerate the growth of new businesses. This function will also develop a network of investors that can benefit SMU’s stakeholders. The Innovation Sandbox is a platform to encourage SMU’s stakeholders to build innovative applications, products and services. SMU has planned an extensive set of innovation and entrepreneurship related programs under the NRF University Innovation Funds scheme. This includes a number of programs that will increase the participation of SMU’s stakeholders in the creation of new innovations and businesses. A number of these programs will also be open to all other Singapore residents.
