Sing Lun Scholarship
 

Funded by Mr Patrick Lee and members of the Lee family, the Sing Lun Scholarship is established in honour of Mr Lee's late father, Mr Lee Chee Hung, who founded the family business. The Scholarship is aimed at motivating full-time undergraduates at the Singapore Management University to achieve greater heights of excellence and at providing them with financial support in the current difficult economic climate.

The scholarships will be awarded over a six-year period commencing Academic Year 2009-10 in the following manner:

  • Eight (8) scholarships annually for Academic Years 2009-10 and 2010-11
  • Six (6) scholarships annually for Academic Years 2011-12 to 2014-15

Each scholarship is valued up to $12,500 and is tenable for one year.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Full-time undergraduates in any programme of study
  • Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents
  • Good academic results
  • Outstanding leadership qualities
  • Active CCA participation
  • Active engagement in local/overseas community outreach programmes
  • With demonstrated financial needs

Tenure and Benefits of the Scholarship

  • Each scholarship is valued up to $12,500 and is tenable for one year.
  • The scholarship will offer financial support towards the scholar's tuition costs and/or study-related expenses, such as Business Study Mission and/or International Student Exchange Programmes with SMU partner universities.
  • The scholar is expected to participate in meaningful community projects with community, social or civic organisations.
  • The scholar is required to submit a 400-word report on his/her community outreach engagement.
  • The scholar may be offered internship and recruitment opportunity by the Donor or its designated companies.
  • No bond is required under the terms of this Scholarship.

Tuition Grant Scheme

  • Recipients are required to take advantage of the Tuition Grant Scheme (TGS) provided by the Singapore Government for subsidized education.
  • Under the TGS, non-Singaporean recipients will be obligated to work in Singapore for a minimum period of three years upon graduation.

Contributed at a time of economic uncertainty, the generous gift by Mr Lee and members of the Lee is a gesture to inspire philanthropy and foster a culture of social responsibility to see beyond their own needs and to give back to society and the community.

Sing Lun was originally founded in 1951 as a textile trading and wholesale company. In 1969, the company expanded into apparel manufacturing. Since then, the company has grown to be a renowned apparel contract manufacturer for international brands and retailers. The company now possesses production facilities in Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Vietnam and China. Besides the apparel business, Sing Lun also invests in real estate, hotels and engineering businesses in Singapore, Malaysia, USA and China.
