Module 5: Leading from the Board of Directors (2 days)

Like most new professional roles - such as transitioning from star performer to functional manager or becoming a general manager for the first time - leading from the board requires an expanded and sometimes subtle set of leadership capacities. In addition to key responsibilities associated with shareholders, risk and strategy to name only a few, board members must also reflect their performance, their unique leadership style, and how it impacts the board's overall performance.

So how can we know what is effective leadership contributing to a high-performing board? The answer will include the following key learning points.

* Quality of input from each board member.

What makes for a persuasive, curious or even insightful contribution during board meetings and discussions, and how can you most effectively display these behaviors?

* High-quality interaction during discussion.

How can you foster meaningful contributions, and build a meaningful discussion and collaboration, thereby improving the entire board's performance and contributions?

* Understanding the director's role

How well do board members know their role, prepare, and relate to management? What types of behaviors allow you to perform this role to the utmost of your ability?

Answering these questions well will help you lead and foster an engaging climate marked by candor, constructive debate, and an ability to work through disagreements (or even conflicts) so that the focus remains on the organization and key stakeholders. Achieving such high performance, however, will not typically happen without strong leadership, and fortunately leadership can be learned.
